I use screenshot tools all the time no matter what computer I’m on. One interesting Windows screenshot tool that I came across recently is called Greenshot. It’s not the most feature-packed utility that you can find, but I’d say it ranks pretty highly seeing that it does come with its own image editor.

Once I started using Greenshot there were some things that immediately popped out to me. The first is something that you can clearly see in the screenshot to the right, and it’s that it highlights the region that will be captured along with providing the dimensions. You don’t have to capture a region though… there are also options to grab a window or the entire screen.

The screenshot editor is simple, but useful. With it you’re able to add some common shapes and text so that the image can be more easily understood by the recipient. You can also highlight or obfuscate parts of the capture. I was a bit surprised when I used the obfuscate feature because it doesn’t blur it out the same way that many other apps do. Instead of being a smoothly blurred area it will be heavily pixelized, which in some ways I actually l like better.

If you dive into the settings you can customize options like the default action you want done after you’ve taken a screenshot. It can open it in the image editor, copy it to the clipboard, send it to a printer, display a dialog to save the file, save it to a pre-defined destination, or email it. One of those options are bound to be what you’re looking for.

Overall I’d say that Greenshot is pretty nice, but will obviously lack features that paid applications like SnagIt offer. It only uses around 16MB when sitting idle though, which is a comfortable amount for a utility like this.

Apple is a fascinating company. Ever since Steve Jobs returned as the company’s leader, Apple has shown that like no other they can get millions excited about new technology. They successfully branched out from selling computers to selling music players and phones. In 2010, they came out with a tablet computer. After people forgot that the iPad reminded them of sanitary napkins, it turned out to be a successful product despite Microsoft’s numerous attempts to make tablet PCs a thing.

But all this success gave Apple increasing power over software developers, people’s privacy and even their competitors. Are there reasons to be concerned?

Apple has filed a patent to kill jailbroken iPhones

Last week a patent application was published where Apple details methods to detect when someone is hacking into your device by snapping pictures, making recordings, analyzing heartbeats and “noting particular activities that can indicate suspicious behavior”. When unauthorized use has been detected, several actions can be taken including going as far as to brick the device.

As long as it’s an opt-in feature, I don’t see any reason to be concerned. In fact, the enterprise world and government organizations would welcome such features.

But here’s the catch. The patent application doesn’t merely cover hacking. It also suggests using the aforementioned techniques to kill jailbroken devices. And yet, a month ago a ruling from the Copyright Office legalized jailbreaking although it will void your warranty.

The verdict: should the jailbreakers among us get be nervous? Yes, but we have to put this into perspective. The patent application was filed way back in February 2009, at a time when the Copyright Office hadn’t declared jailbreaking legal yet. It’s possible that Apple changed their mind because of the ruling. But if they start enforcing this, legal battles and protests will ensue… and Apple’s newly added layer of security will get hacked two days later.

Apple collects your current location and interests to serve you targeted ads

When Apple launched the iAd advertising network in July 2010, the company started using location data from their iOS and OS X users to enable location-based advertising. Responding to a query from two concerned Congressmen, Apple put things into perspective.

The iAd network will collect your ZIP code to serve up location-based ads. This is done when an ad is requested. In the case of the iPhone, this will be when you open an iAd-supported app. Latitude and longitude will not be saved or associated with you. The iAd server will associate the ZIP code with your device’s ID to serve you ads based on your location. Location data about individual users will not be shared with advertisers. You can opt out of location-based advertising only by disabling location services entirely in your system settings.

Secondly, iAd may serve ads based on your interests. You can opt out of this on a per-device basis. To do this, go to https://oo.apple.com/ on the device.

The verdict: while iAd’s practices are wide-spread across established ad networks (including limited location-based advertising based on your IP address), iAd could be considered sneaky since it is integrated into iOS, it doesn’t have to ask permission to use your location. Opting out of interest-based advertising is relatively easy, but to opt out of location-based advertising you have to give up location services altogether.

Apple keeps tight control over its App Store and engages in anti-competitive behavior

Developing for iOS can be stressful. Even if you manage to get the money together to start an app development business and manage to write an app that has huge potential, Apple has the final decision over your fate. The company can refuse your app or even remove it from the App Store whenever it wants. To be fair, Apple has tried to make the decision process more transparent. But they have at several occasions faced accusations of maintaining double standard when they rejected some apps, some of which were later approved. Still, whether their review process is fair or not, isn’t it a little ironic that the App Store’s director sells his own fart apps?

There is an argument to be made that justifies Apple’s right to do with the App Store whatever they want. But this has lead to monopolistic behavior at times. When Google tried to release Google Voice for the iPhone, the app was rejected. There’s no denying the conflict of interest: iPhone carrier AT&T is not keen on letting you send free texts and making cheap international calls through Google over AT&T’s data network. An FCC inquiry followed.

Here’s another example of anti-competitive behavior: when iOS 4 was announced, Apple changed their Terms of Service to ban rivaling ad networks from gathering crucial analytic data, such as the number of ad clicks. This could bar app developers from partnering with iAd competitors such as AdMob, a Google-owned company. According to AdMob CEO Omar Hamoui, “advertisers won’t buy ads when they can’t even tell how many people had clicked on that ad”, which seems fair. Apple hasn’t enforced this new rule, but if they will regulators are likely to respond.

The verdict: Apple’s apparent unwillingness to tolerate competition in their own App Store is worrisome. Apple’s inconsistency in their App Store approval process is bad for developers – especially the small independent ones – although they have taken steps to eliminate any double standards.

I saw System Silencer being written about on several blogs a month or two ago, and thought it was kinda cool. It would let you set a period of time that your computer could sit idle, and after that it would assume you left your machine. When it determined you were away you could have it do things like turn off your monitor, toggle the mute so that music would stop playing, kill a single program, and a handful of other things. It was nice, but nothing a few scheduled tasks couldn’t do. In the state it was in I can’t say I was all that excited about the app.

I bookmarked the site so that I’d remember to see if any improvements have been made because I knew it had some potential, and I’m rather impressed with the latest changes. It still does a lot of the same stuff, but does it much more intelligently:

You can decide what actions you want to perform when on battery mode and which ones to perform when plugged in.

Set the idle time for each action individually rather than having one uniform time limit.

Specify multiple processes to kill or multiple programs to run… it’s no longer limited to just one.

Hide specific windows based on the window name (or just a portion of the window name).

Define a timeframe that you don’t want System Silencer to take action on. This is useful for having it run when your computer is left idle overnight, but not having it do anything during the day when you may have just stepped out to grab lunch.

I’m rather impressed at the amount of work the developer has put into this app to make it useful, and am hoping that he’ll come up with some other cool features.

Performance note: This app uses about 3MB of memory while running, which isn’t much.

 Windows only
After a little while it can be nice to freshen up the appearance of the things we use each day. I’m sure that many of us start off the morning with a Windows login prompt on the screen, and with a quick DLL replacement you can make that Windows 7 login screen look completely different than what ships with the stock OS.

I’m going to focus on getting the login screen you see in the screenshot above, which is modeled after the Longhorn project. It’s actually very close to the Longhorn login screen, which you can see in this screencast I had made.

Once you head on over to this DeviantArt page you’ll see three different sets of DLLs that you can grab. One doesn’t have the Windows flag, another one has it (this is the one in the screenshot above), and another one has an embedded version that is located inside the transparent glass. Grab which ever one you want, and make sure you get the correct version (32-bit or 64-bit) depending on what you have installed. You can even grab all three, and replace the DLL a few times to figure out which one you like the appearance of more.

The file you will be replacing is the authui.dll that is located in the C:\Windows\System32 folder. However, before you’ll be able to replace the DLL you’ll need to take ownership of the authui.dll file. To do so I highly recommend using the registry script here, which will add a “Take Ownership” option to the context menu. The download includes a second script that you can run to remove the option from the context menu after everything is done, or I’d say it is useful enough to keep around.

Now that you’ve taken ownership of the authui.dll file you can go ahead and replace it. You should then be able to logoff or lock your machine to immediately see the changes.

The DeviantArt page also references the background image they use in their screenshots as well as a free (no-install) application you can use to update the background image to anything you want. Personally I like the native Windows 7 background with this design, so I’ll be keeping it around for the time being.

This set of free online tools all let you share files without ever having to upload them to a third-party site. One of the major benefits of going this route is that you can share files without size limitations.

Video editing is something that can kind of be a pain, and in some cases can even cost a lot of money if you don’t already have decent hardware/software to do it. JayCut wants to help with both of those things. A free account will get you 2GB of storage and the ability to export/save up to 20 videos per month. I’d say that is more than sufficient for most people.

For being an online video editor JayCut is capable of some impressive things. More importantly, however, is that it handles all of the basic things very well:

Remix/trim videos and images

Add music, transitions and effects

Add captions and subtitles

Automated transcoding

1-Click export to YouTube

Export videos for iPhone, Windows and Mac (MPEG-4 – H.264, MPEG-4 – XVID, AVI – XVID, Flash – H.264)

That’s not all either. They just upgraded the editor a few weeks ago to include webcam/voice-over support, slow motion effects, green screen compatibility, and colorization techniques. When you combine all of this together you get a rather powerful video editor, and it’s all free.

The big downside to using an online video editor is that all of your media has to be uploaded to their servers before you can do anything with it. If you’re working with large files it can be rather frustrating, but it can also be a blessing in disguise. Anyone who has worked with video editors knows what kind of computing power it takes to put a well-edited video together. Using JayCut you pawn all of the processing off on their servers, and this therefore makes it a bit more reasonable to do your editing on virtually any machine.

There are a lot of online services popping up that help you get fast access to your favorite tunes without having to drop a dime. One of my favorites is definitely Grooveshark, but there are a plenty of other alternatives out there. The one I’m going to talk about today is called Moof.

Moof is interesting because, like some other services we’ve seen, it relies on the availability of music videos on YouTube. That has both positive and negative sides. The positive is that you should be able to find virtually any song you want. The negative, however, is that you may have to sift through a lot of poorly formatted titles to find the one you’re looking for. There is a nifty feature that will help you populate your library though.

In the screenshot above you may have noticed the “upload” link in the upper-right corner. Naturally you’d think Moof would let you upload your own songs, but it doesn’t. Instead you upload your iTunes library XML file, and it will automatically find matching songs for everything in your music library. It will also pull in any existing playlists that you’ve already created in iTunes, which makes things a lot easier than trying to start from scratch.

I figured some of you may be unsure of where your iTunes Music Library XML file is located, and so here is a breakdown of the locations based on the operating system you’re using:

Mac OS X

/Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml

Windows XP & 2000

\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml

Windows Vista

\Users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml

Windows 7

\Users\username\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml

Moof may not be revolutionary, but the import feature makes it a little easier to get access to your favorite songs and playlists from any desktop browser. You can also re-upload the iTunes XML file as you make changes to your music library in iTunes, and it will intelligently add new songs to Moof. Doing so will not create duplicate entries, which is something I was worried about.

Developing color schemes can be difficult at times, but with an online service like ColorSuckr you can provide it with an image to have it pull out the top 12 colors. It has a range of features to make generating the color schemes from any image extremely easy.

For starters you can point it to the URL of an image, or even the URL of a website. If you do the latter you’ll be presented with a list of images found on the site that you can pick from. It gets even easier than that though.

On their homepage you’ll also find both a Firefox extension and bookmarklet that let you quickly grab colors from an online photo. Personally I prefer the bookmarklet since I like to keep my Firefox running as light as possible. If you decide to go the bookmarklet route all it takes is a single click and each image will have a “Get colors from this image” link placed overtop of it. Clicking on that link will take you to ColorSuckr where you can then get the breakdown of the colors used.

The last thing I want to point out is that you can drag-and-drop the color results around the page. That way you can pull out the colors you think will look great together and set them off to the side. It’s a great way to organize your thoughts as you go through them all.

Setting up your first profile consists of filling out the information in the screenshot above, and after that you can go on to schedule the task if it’s something you want to run on a regular basis. Here are all the different things Synchronicity is capable of:

Fully customizable synchronization and backup, including:

Limited synchronization: synchronize some folders only, or synchronize folders contents without synchronizing subfolders.

Full regexp support for files inclusion/exclusion

3 synchronization methods:

Mirror

One-way incremental

Two-ways incremental

File hashing

Full scheduling support (daily, weekly, monthly, at a particular time, etc.)

Support for multiple profiles

Fully portable: settings are stored in a single config file

By-volume-label paths: Create Synchronicity can backup directly to “My Usb”\Documents for example, by automagically locating the “My Usb” drive.

Advanced features:

File hashing, various comparison options

Time offsets, to compensate for wrong DST settings

Loose timing: allow file time to differ by a few seconds

Multiple file systems support (all the ones supported by Windows)

Native support for UCN (network) and relative paths

Proxy support for updates check.

For command line addicts: support for command-line arguments, allowing you to queue profiles, run silently, with optional preview display.

If you haven’t tried out Synchronicity then I highly recommend that you do. It’s not as full-featured as something like SyncBack (e.g. this doesn’t include FTP support), but it includes a lot of the features most people will need… plus some.
