It’s been about six months since Pownce first launched into an invite-only beta, and now they’ve jumped out into the public. It’s considered to be a “social networking and micro-blogging” site, and it resembles Twitter quite a bit except with more features. While this is a major milestone for them, the fact that they’re now open to the public, do they have a chance at becoming something big? At this point Twitter is so established and used by many, many more people than Pownce that I don’t know if it’s possible.  Pownce did add a few new features for this launch though that might help them, so let’s take a look.

• New version of their Desktop Client is now available - runs on Adobe Air
• Users can directly respond to messages from friends
• Import your friend’s list from Digg, Flickr, Twitter or Facebook to save yourself time tracking down friends
• Events are on their own page

I joined Pownce back when it first launched, but I haven’t really done much with it since.  It’s just not something I’ve found that I visit on a regular basis. While I think the overall look, feel, and functionality of it is superior to Twitter, I just don’t know if people are going to be willing to adapt to yet another social service. Regardless, welcome to the public, Pownce.
